The history of a community contributes to its personality. From the Tanana Dene People who have lived on these lands for thousands of years to the first settlers seeking opportunity, Fairbanks has been infused with personality. 2026 will mark the 250th anniversary or Semi quincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This is an opportunity to celebrate the people, places and natural features of our community through a lens of the past. While no battles were fought on this land, the aspirational ideals of freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are evident in the changes over time that resulted in the vibrant culture we see today.

Founded during the gold rush era, Fairbanks attracted individuals seeking independence and the freedom to build new lives in a rugged frontier. Whether you are visiting a local attraction housed in a historic structure or recreating on a landscape used for hunting and gathering for 1000’s of years, Fairbanks offers visitors the chance to celebrate this milestone while enjoying key events, cultural attractions, wild landscapes and Alaskan hospitality.
