White Mountains 100 — March 22-23, 2026 · 100 Miles · Foot · Ski · Bike

The ultimate Alaskan winter backcountry endurance challenge.
Traverse 100 miles of frozen ridges, snow-covered valleys, and remote wilderness — on foot, skis, or fat-bike — in one of Alaska’s most rugged and beautiful landscapes.

Why WM 100? An Unforgettable Test of Endurance

  • Remote & wild terrain: Travel through the White Mountains National Recreation Area — from gently rolling ridges and black-spruce forests to frozen waterways, sweeping meadows, and ice-covered overflow valleys. Snowmachine trails form the backbone of the route.

  • Epic 100-mile loop: Begin and end at the Wickersham Dome Trailhead (Milepost 28 on the Elliott Highway), roughly an hour’s drive north of Fairbanks — covering more than 8,000 feet of total elevation gain

  • Challenging & wild conditions: Expect Arctic temperatures, drifting snow, potential water crossings, and even wildlife encounters. This isn’t a race for beginners — racers must be fully self-sufficient, experienced in winter backcountry travel, and prepared for whatever Alaska winter throws

Race Format & Logistics

  • Date & Time: March 22–23, 2026 — 8:00 AM Sunday to 11:59 PM Monday (40-hour cutoff).

  • Mode of travel: Choose your challenge — foot, ski, or bike. Confirm your division by the Friday before the race.

  • Pre-Race Meeting: Mandatory — held the day before at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (Reichardt Auditorium, March 21). Sign-in 3:00–4:00 PM.

  • Race Headquarters & Parking: Racers meet at Wickersham Dome trailhead (Elliott Hwy MP 28). There is no parking at the trailhead itself — vehicles must be parked across the highway in a large pullout directed by race volunteers. Allow ~1 hour driving from Fairbanks.

Support, Aid & Self-Reliance

  • Aid stations every ~20 miles: Four checkpoints along the course offer warm food, snacks, drinks, and shelter — with hot dishes like baked potatoes, meatball soup, ramen, and hearty snacks to refuel you. Finish line also serves grilled food, drinks, and hot beverages.

  • Limited shelter & emergency support: While aid stations offer warmth and sustenance, racers are expected to carry sufficient food, water, and gear for unpredictable cold, water crossings, and possibly deep snow or overflow. Suggested gear includes a sleeping bag, insulated water container, headlamp, extra socks/clothing, and emergency supplies.

  • Experience required: You must have completed a winter event of at least 25+ miles or 24+ hours duration in the last two years — or have equivalent cold-weather, long-distance experience.

Registration & Entry

  • Entry fee: $285.

  • Entry by lottery: Registration opens in late November, closes first week of December. Around ~85 slots go through a lottery drawing; remaining applicants go on a waitlist.

  • Refund policy: Refunds tiered depending on how far in advance you cancel — from 100% (early) down to 25% (final week before race). No deferrals allowed.

  • Commitment needed: Missing a mandatory pre-race meeting or skipping a checkpoint disqualifies you. Race organizers reserve the right to refuse entry.

Who This Race is For

This is not a casual snow-shoe fun run. WM 100 is for experienced winter athletes ready for a true backcountry endurance test — those who crave remote wilderness, self-reliance, and a challenge that pushes limits. Whether you’re running, biking, or skiing, this is the ultimate Alaska-winter test.
