Wedge weave, also known as scalloped edge weave or lightning design, is an important part of the Dine (Navajo) weaving tradition. By weaving on the diagonal rather than straight across the fabric, the weaver is able to create unique lines and shapes in a very dynamic way with a lot of energy and movement. It’s simple and easy to learn the basics and in this class, you’ll have an opportunity to practice the technique and design your own small wedge weave piece. We will be weaving on small upright tabletop looms that are portable and easy to manage. All equipment and materials will be supplied.

Participants in weaving workshops often progress at slightly different rates, so if you need time beyond the end of the class, you will be welcome to attend the free Open Studio each Wednesday at the Fairbanks Weavers’ and Spinners’ Guild to complete your project. Instructors and other experienced weavers are always on hand.

This is a tapestry weaving technique and while no prior experience is required, we do recommend attending a free Tapestry Basics session prior to the first class meeting if you have never woven before. Your instructors will reach out with further details on time options for Tapestry Basics.
