UAF Winter Carnival is back! Celebrate winter the Alaskan way with a full day of outdoor adventure, community spirit, and Nanook pride.

This beloved Fairbanks tradition invites students, families, and community members to embrace the season with an exciting lineup of winter activities. From ice climbing and dog mushing to ski events, hockey, and more, Winter Carnival offers something for all ages and experience levels.

With roots dating back to 1927, Winter Carnival began as a student-led celebration inspired by the local “Polar Bear” hockey team and quickly grew into a cornerstone of winter life in Fairbanks. The construction of the first toboggan slide nearly a century ago marked the start of a legacy that continues to bring people together year after year.

Today, UAF Winter Carnival honors that rich history while creating new memories for the next generation. While the event is a major UAF tradition, it is open to the entire community, welcoming students, faculty, staff, and local residents alike. Special activities will also be offered for admitted students throughout the day.

Come celebrate nearly 100 years of winter fun—bundle up, get outside, and be part of one of Alaska’s most iconic winter traditions.
