Timber Framing 101

/
About
+-

This class will provide a very basic introduction to mortise and tenon joinery. We’ll start by briefly reviewing the history of timber framing, the square rule method, and general joinery and design considerations. Then we’ll get out the timbers and start cutting. As a class, we will build one 8 by 10 foot woodshed. Each student will have the chance to cut three mortise and tenon joints. Students will learn and practice reading plans, laying out joinery, and cutting tenons and mortises. We will also briefly cover timber selection, safe handling of timbers, timber-framing tools, and useful resources. The goal is to give those new to timber-framing a sense of the craft and the tools, skills, and space needed to complete basic timber-frame projects.
