Join North Star Ballet for our 35th annual Spring Gala, April 22nd & 23rd at UAF's Salisbury Theatre. The first act features the story ballet, "The Firebird," a Russian fairytale that has it all: a foolhardy prince; lovely princesses; brightly colored monsters and minions; a villain who lives in a golden egg (because, why not); and a phoenix who saves the day.
The second act presents shorter works by North Star Ballet choreographers, including some never-before-seen pieces. The compilation of modern, contemporary and classical works showcases the breadth of our company's talent. Featured pieces include:
"Bereft" - set to the music of “Fratres” by Arvo Pärt, this dance expresses the effects that a catastrophic disruption on an ecosystem have on human emotions.
"Sway" - an abstract ballet exploring the juxtaposition between fixedness and movement. Set to music with percussive undertones and recurring melodic themes by the artist Heinali.
"Rassemblement" - a new classical work premiering to a score by Dvorak, this ballet evokes a gathering at a village square. There's a sibling rivalry, a blossoming friendship, and a proverbial keeper of the peace to maintain order.
"Light Moving" - this duet utilizes contemporary movements that intertwine each dancer, while playing with the idea of separation within that unity.
"Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler" - a joyful romp set to the music of the New Orleanian composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk and featuring North Star Ballet's Junior Company
