You asked—and we’re doing the field meet! 🌿🪨
This first meetup will be beginner-friendly, relaxed, and all about having fun outdoors. Waterproof footwear is a must, and life vests are required for little ones. We’ll be meeting at the pull-off at Mile 56 on the Steese Highway.
If you’re unfamiliar with the area, need directions, or would like to caravan out together, we can meet in town and head out as a group. For everyone else, I’ll provide clear directions ahead of time. Please note: we’ll be outside of cell service.
This is a very casual gathering—no pressure, no experience required. I’ll bring snacks and water, and you’re welcome to bring anything extra you’d like. While I originally planned this for early spring, midsummer will be much better: the river will be lower, and getting around will be easier.
If you have rockhounding tools, feel free to bring them along! Sometimes we use tools, sometimes we just carry a bag and collect shiny things—however you like to rockhound, you’re welcome here.
For safety, I will be armed and carrying bear spray; feel free to bring your own as well.
The Chatanika has never disappointed me—past finds include bone, geodes, several types of quartz, jasper, chert, and some truly awesome pudding stones. I’m so excited to share this spot and spend the afternoon with you all!
