On Saturday, July 27, 2024, at 3 PM, the First United Methodist Church Music & More performance series will feature the barrelhouse piano and vocals of Ethan Leinwand and Val Jo Kirchhoff, aka Miss Jubilee.
Valerie (vocals) and Ethan (piano) are a St. Louis-based duo that specialize in the early and low-down blues of the 1920s and 30s. Their shared love for the forgotten sounds of St. Louis piano blues brought them together. After connecting online in 2014, Ethan (previously based in New York City) relocated to St. Louis, and they have been collaborating ever since. The pair married in winter of 2023.
This high-spirited duo can be seen playing regularly in their hometown, and they have performed across the United States and Europe, from Alaskan saloons, Mississippi riverboats and storied Viennese jazz clubs. They have headlined blues and boogie-woogie festivals in Europe and are regulars of the ragtime, blues and early jazz circuits in the US.
Michael Steinman, writing in JAZZ LIVES, said "Ethan and Valerie have a certain brash tenderness that is very much appealing... and even when they perform songs that are by today’s standards “ancient,” they seem full of emotion and fun."
Val and Ethan played to large local crowds last summer and are returning for several performances during their week-long stay. We are fortunate that they can include Music & More in their busy week.
Music & More, which began in August 2022, features both local and out-of-town artists offering family-oriented entertainment for all ages. Admission is free, but donations are gladly accepted at the door. Each month, the series offers music, drama, dance or readings.
On Friday evening, August 30, at 7 PM, international concert pianist and recording artist Thomas Pandolfi will present a solo recital. Thomas has captivated audiences around the world with virtuosic performances, selling out prestigious stages and earning accolades from critics and peers alike.
And on Sunday afternoon, September 22, beginning at 3 PM, we’ll enjoy a performance by well-known local favorites Ted DeCorso, Clarinet; Paul Krejci, Piano; featuring special guest Thom McLean, violin. Their program is entitled Paris in September: Music from the Turn-of-the-20th-Century.
