Mammoth ivory, the fossil tusks of long dead ancient pachyderms, is hard and polishes to a beautiful luster. Unlike walrus ivory, it is legal for anyone to possess and carve. In Alaska, fossil ivory has mostly been frozen in the permafrost for tens of thousands of years, where it can take on various colors of tan, brown or even blue.

In this class we will learn to make simple shapes out of mastodon ivory and bring them to a high polish for earrings and pendants.
