You’ve probably heard of a square knot, but what is a clove hitch? And what kinds of knots are incredibly helpful when you are setting up camp?

In this knots skills for kids class, students will learn seven basic knots and lashings. They will learn why knots are used, what gives them their strength, and how they can be used in everyday life—especially in Alaska.

Whether creating a clothesline for camping, building a fort in the backyard, securing a meat pole, or crafting a pulley system to get the 4-wheeler unstuck, students will become aware of the various ways knots and lashing skills can be applied.

Each student will leave with some cordage, a knot handout to practice their skills, and confidence that they can do this on their own!

Age range: 11 – 17
