Finnish Shaving Tree (Lastukuusi)

Instructor: Philip Marshall

Pictured are the tools to hand carve a Finnish shaving tree or lastukuusi. It’s a folkcraft fashioning a traditional decoration from a single piece of dry aspen.

We shall work with these different tools on a shaving horse or sitting at a workbench. Two techniques of carving will be taught. There are some tricks to this curling style so we’ll start out small to learn. Add a base and you’ve created a delightful, long-lived holiday ornament or a short-lived, effective fire starter.

(For those inspired, Phil will hang around in the afternoon to assist.)

Everything is provided. Previous whittling experience is helpful, but not mandatory. Some degree of coordination and hand strength are necessary.
