Chena River to Ridge – 2026 Edition

Date: February 28, 2026 · Distances: 26 mile & 55 mile · Modes: Ski · Bike · Run

Why You Should Come

  • Alaska-winter beauty & serious challenge: Set in the wild terrain of the Chena River State Recreation Area — just 30 miles east of Fairbanks — the course winds through maintained snowmachine trails, climbs to ridge-tops with sweeping views of local hills and even the Alaska Range, then drops fast with thrilling descents and blind turns.

  • Flexible challenge for many skill levels: Whether you prefer skiing, fat-biking, or trail running, you can tackle either the shorter 26-mile or the full 55-mile course.

Race Details & Schedule

  • Start/Finish Location: Twin Bears Camp — milepost 30 on Chena Hot Springs Road.

  • Trail Description:

    • Race begins with a short stretch to the Yukon Quest trail, then onto the Colorado Creek and Compeau trails. Around mile 8 you’ll hit a steep climb from ~700 ft to ~2,400 ft in the first ~9 miles — the ridge-top then follows with rolling terrain and winter-wide views.

    • The descent from ridge to valley drops over ~6 miles with a few small climbs — then the trail reconnects with the Yukon Quest for the final leg back. Short course finishes here; long course racers loop again via the Stiles Creek trail for the second 29 miles. Trail Conditions & What to Expect:

    • Trails are maintained by the state, but may not be freshly groomed — expect drifted snow, soft spots, or wind-affected surfaces especially after new snowfall.

    • The trail width is mostly snowmachine-standard: narrow in many places (classic skis ideal), with a few wider sections possibly usable for skate skis. Cyclists should be able to ride most terrain — though some hike-a-bike may be needed depending on snow and trail softness.

Aid Stations, Checkpoints & Support

  • Aid & Checkpoint Setup:

    • Aid station near mile 14 — refreshments and a warming tent, but not mandatory.

    • Mandatory checkpoint at mile 26 — finish line for 26-mile race; 55-mile racers must check in/out here. Hot/cold drinks, snacks, and a grill (hot-dog & vegan options) available.

    • Another aid station around mile 35 on the second loop for 55-mile racers — warming tent, refreshments, must check in this year.

  • Self-sufficiency required: Racers must carry their own gear, water, food. No dogs or motorized help allowed. You must finish using the same mode you started with.

Registration & Logistics

  • Registration opens: December 6, 2025 (first-come, first-served). Fields are capped at 100 participants — so register early to secure a spot.

  • Fees (2026): $80 for 26 miles / $90 for 55 miles if registered early; increases to $90 / $100 after February 1.

  • Check-in & Pre-Race Meeting: Mandatory — check-in 45 minutes before your start. 55-mile racers meet at 7:45 AM; 26-mile at 8:45 AM.

  • Cutoff Time: Finish by 9:00 PM Saturday. 55-mile racers must reach mile-26 checkpoint by 3:40 PM or risk disqualification.

  • Parking & Access: Parking at Twin Bears is limited (mostly for volunteers). If full, overflow parking will be at the Compeau trailhead (~½ mile away), meaning some racers may walk ~200 yards to the start. Carpooling is highly recommended.

Why CR2R Is Unique — And Who It's For

CR2R is a true Interior Alaska winter adventure — rugged, beautiful, and unpredictable. It’s perfect if you’re into:

  • Backcountry-style challenge — steep climbs, ridge-tops, remote quiet forest and ridgeline terrain.

  • Multi-sport flexibility — choose whether to ski, fat-bike, or run, depending on conditions and your preference.

  • Self-reliance & mental grit — while aid stations are available, racers must be prepared and self-sufficient.

  • A tight, controlled field — limited to 100 participants for safety and trail quality.

If you want to push yourself and immerse in Alaska-winter wilderness — CR2R offers one of the most compelling multi-sport ultra experiences near Fairbanks.
