The Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race
Alaska, home to so many buck wild and hardcore things is
defined by epic journeys. The Yukon Quest International Sled Dog race
(decidedly an epic journey) is the manifestation of this bold and extreme side
of our state’s collective nature. It is pretty amazing to think that at this
very moment, in the throes of February, there are teams of dogs running mile
after challenging mile through beautiful yet hostile terrain.
Quest dogs and their mushers are serious athletes. They cast
comfort and routine aside to summit four peaks, cross countless frozen rivers, brave
the cold and defy the elements. Quite simply they Go the Distance. In this case
the distance happens to be 1000 brutal yet breathtaking miles. It is perhaps
impossible to think of something equally as punishing or as rewarding. We Alaskans
admire the mushers and their teams and know they are doing something epic,
something outstanding, something few will attempt, and even fewer will conquer.
Go safely. Go swiftly. Go the Distance.
