With the grasp of winter fully upon us here in the Alaskan
interior you might want to embrace one of those long day dreams about getting
out and enjoying the beautiful area that we live in. With a few smartly added
layers and some good ol’ gumption, getting out there is a lot easier than you
might think. For instance Denali
National Park, Alaska offers many adventurous things to do in the winter season http://www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/winter-activities.htm.
From cross country skiing to mushing to snow shoeing there
are so many things to enjoy. I put this notion to the test when I went to
Denali Nation Park and dropped into the Murie Science and Learning Center,
directly across Park road (the Murie building acts as the visitor center in the
winter months). The staff at the Murie building is very helpful and willing to
take the time to explain what to do and where to go and in no time at all I had
signed for my snow shoes, which are free to the public on a first come first
serve basis.
I took a moment to view some of the outstanding displays
they have explaining a good deal of the science that surrounds Denali before I stepped
out of the building and into a wonderful winter wonderland. I made my way through
the terrain to some of the most awe inspiring nature scenes one can see
anywhere in the world. It might be winter and it might be a bit cold outside but
it is still beautiful and fun and the Murie Science Center has a fire place to
warm you up once you return from your excursions. So don’t be afraid to get out
there and enjoy the great things that a short trip down the road to Denali
offers.
